Introduction to Western Culture Counterculture In this class we will look at this thing ‘counterculture’ and what it means. Counterculture is an interesting part of Western Culture, and one you probably don’t know about. Counterculture is made of two different words Counter – counter means opposing. So counter culture means something to do with an opposing culture. We look at the ‘Hippy’ movement in the 60s and 70s. Actually, the romantic movement we have already looked at is an example of counterculture. Counterculture It is a sociological term. Describes values and norms of a cultural group, that run counter to those of the mainstream. It is the cultural equivalent of political opposition.
