* The development and main features of Chinese painting Chinese painting in the ancient period Chinese painting in the middle period : the Three Kingdoms and the Jin Dynasties the Tang Dynasty the Song and Yuan Dynasties Qing Dynasties Chinese painting in the modern period Chinese painting in the ancient period 1 The initial painting made its appearance as early as in the prehistorical society. 2 In the Shang and Zhou Dynaties that the paintings found expressions in such material form as on bronze,silk ,and the walls or other ornamental designs.They are illusive objects or idols like those in myth or legend. 3 Towards the end of the Zhou,new forms of painting came to the fore,such as murals,silk paintings and actual painted pictures.Murals were recorded in some ancient books,like the description of Confucius watching a mural in Confucius Talking with His Family（《孔子家语》） 4 In the Han dynasty,silk painting became a principal form of painting.The five excavated pieces of silk painting from Mawangdui Tomb,Changsha,comfirmed this tendency. The most representative among the five is the T-shaped piece which provides the three components of human imagination:heaven,human world and underground. Many of the murals of the Han Dynasty are well kept and could be observed in the tombs.They describe superstitious beliefs: the dead ascending to the heaven or the ritual ceremonies for the dead. One of the inventions during this period was stone and brick painting.Some of them have constituted a series,forming an independent group of pictures.
