Many people believe it’s very necessary to take such a test. To begin with, as a basic part of the language, spoken English is getting more and more important in this information age. One won’t achieve much in the intercultural communication unless one can express oneself well. In other words, fluent English is an indication of one’s mastery of the language. Therefore, a test ought to be designed to assess one’s level of spoken English. However, some people hold the opposite viewpoint. They hold that written exam is enough to test one’s comprehensive English level. So long as one does not want to study abroad or cooperate with foreigners in foreign enterprises, one need not worry about taking such a test. Because written English enables students not only to read reference books but also work on Internet.
