Unit 7 The Sea Culture Corner Zheng He and His Seven Voyages Background Part I Zheng He (about 1371–1435) Simplified Chinese: 郑和 Birth name: Ma He (马和) Also known as: Ma Sanbao (马三宝 ) Zheng He was a Chinese mariner ( 海员,水手), explorer, diplomat (外交官) and fleet admiral (舰队司令), who made the voyages to Southeast Asia, South Asia, and East Africa, collectively referred to as the travels of “Eunuch Sanbao to the Western Ocean” (三保太监下西洋) or “Zheng He to the Western Ocean”, from 1405 to 1433. Zheng He was the second son of a Muslim (穆斯林 ) family which also had four daughters, from Kunyang (昆阳), present day Jinning (晋宁), just south of Kunming near the southwest corner of Lake Tian in Yunnan. Between 1405 and 1433, the Ming government sponsored (发起) a series of seven naval (海军的) expeditions. Zheng He was placed as the admiral in control of the huge fleet and armed forces that undertook these expeditions. Zheng He’s ships, as depicted (描绘) in a Chinese woodblock (木版) print.
