In formal situations, use more indirect expressions (see Function File). Try to use polite intonation. When refusing a request, give a reason, e.g. I’m sorry but…, I’m afraid that… Try to look friendly and smile at the person you are talking to. Indirect questions: the polite and friendly questions Indirect questions are very useful, so you should learn how to use them! They help you sound polite, by not asking a question directly to someone. They are very easy to use. Lets compare some examples of direct and indirect forms. Direct: Can I use your telephone? Indirect: Would it be possible to use your telephone? Here’s another example: Direct: Are you coming to my party this weekend? Indirect: Do you know if you are coming to my party this weekend? One more example: Direct: Where can I catch a bus? Indirect: Could you tell me where I could catch a bus? Learn some question beginnings. ? Could you tell me …? ? Do you know …? ?
