In the UK medicines are classified into three categories. 1 General-sales-list preparations are medicines that can be supplied by most retailers in supermarkets, etc. Some simple analgesics, e.g. aspirin and antacids are widely available for sale. These preparations may be used exclusively or inappropriately and can contribute to drug-related morbidity either by direct toxicity or through drug interactions. 2 Pharmacy medicines, which may only be supplied by a registered pharmacist, may be supplied to a patient without a prescription from a registered medical practitioner. These “over the counter” preparations may cause adverse effects and interact with other prescribed drugs. 3 Prescription-only medicines can only be supplied by a pharmacist on the prescription of a registered medical (or dental) practitioner.
