Mount Rushmore Mount Rushmore Towering over the Black Hills of South Dakota at 6,000 feet above sea level are the four lifelike figures of America’s greatest presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. The busts of the four presidents comprise the Mount Rushmore National Memorial. They are the largest sculptures in the world. The average height of each face is 60 feet! The busts were cut out of a granite cliff by Gutzon Borglum and his son. Borglum began this monumental task when he was sixty years old. He worked on the project for 14 years from 1927 until his death in 1941. But he did not finish the busts. Upon his death, his son continued the project. The son finished the monuments in the same year of his father’s death. Nearly one million tons of granite were removed to create the gigantic sculptured faces, which can be seen from a distance of 60 miles!
