The World Travel Tourism Council (WTTC)2 estimates that this industry represents around 11% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP)3. In 2008 the World Tourism Organization (WTO) reported 924 million international arrivals and anticipates that the numbers will grow up to 1.6 billion in the next ten years. Nowadays, within the tourism industry, cultural heritage is the most rapidly growing sector4. According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP) , “cultural heritage tourism means traveling to experience the places and activities that authentically5 represent the stories and people of the past and present. It includes irreplaceable6, historic, cultural and natural resources”. In other words, it is the kind of tourism where heritage is the most important reason for the travel and it becomes a central part of the travel experience. Accordingly, tourism is becoming a tool to preserve cultural heritage in three ways: designing sustainable7 tourism policies, creating economic benefits to communities and developing virtual8 traveler communities interested in sharing and preserving heritage.
