生命的来去,有它清晰的脉络,我们无力抗拒 (1925) MRS DALLOWAY (1925) There is no real plot because the novel presents the thoughts, memories, associations and ideas of the characters in a stream of consciousness form. The aim of the book is to carry out an analysis of time and of the endless changing of life Time is marked by the Big Ben, so realistic details mix with the subjective time of consciousness. The entire action is centred on Clarissa and different people who are linked each other with their present or past ties with Clarissa and are finally brought together by her evening party It is through all these people’s minds that the action develops, through their thoughts, feelings, emotions which are not presented in linear progression, but in an alternation of flashbacks and present actions Analysis of “Mrs. Dalloway” ? “Mrs. Dalloway” is a tightly structured novel. All its actions take place in one day in London. The time frame of the novel is twenty-four hours in the life of a middle-aged woman, Mrs. Dalloway, whose husband is a Member of Parliament. ? The novel does not have a plot in the conventional sense. It focuses on the inner lives of the characters. As the ebb and flow of personal impressions, feelings, and thoughts are described, the characters unfold themselves vividly in front of the reader. The passing of hours is indicated by the chimes of Big Ben. ? It reminds the reader of the actual reality of the physical world. The novel is characterized by its poetic narrative and frequent uses of imagery, symbol, and metaphor. It successfully presents the inner lives of human beings and their otherwise hidden mental world. Mrs Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself, is the first sentence of the novel: the statement of an authorial narrator, but an impersonal and inscrutable one, who does not explain who Mrs Dalloway is or why she needed to buy flowers.
