(synonym) Magna Charta , The Great Charter (hypernym) royal charter 2nd Contents Magna Carta was made up of a preface and 63 items. The main content was that the powers of nobility and the church were inviolable by the king. All citizens have civil liberties; London and other cities enjoy autonomy; the King must inquire with the nobility and listen to the citizens’ views before taxation. Any citizen is not allowed to be arrested, prisoned, confiscated property, exiled Magna Carta was set up to require King John of England to proclaim certain rights (pertaining to nobles and barons), respect certain legal procedures, and accept that his will could be bound by the law. It explicitly protected certain rights of the Kings subjects, whether free or fettered — and implicitly supported what became the writ of habeas corpus, allowing appeal against unlawful imprisonment. Magna Carta was the first document forced onto an English King by a group of his subjects (the barons) in an attempt to limit his powers by law and protect their privileges.
