Unite 4 Making the news There are many kinds of occupations in the world, so which one do you want to choose ? Or what are you going to be in the future? Suppose you were to be a journalist for China Daily, do you know what kind of jobs they have? Look at English newspaper. Then discuss in pairs and fill in the chart on page 25. the meaning of the following words and structures. A.Get all your facts straight B.To have a “nose” for a story C.Get the wrong end of the stick D.A real “scoop” E.Cover a story F.A trick of the trade it means to go and interview somebody about an incident or happening. it means to be able to “smell” when somebody is trying to hide a good story that reflects badly on him/herself. It means something that helps you do the job in a professional way. it means making sure that the story is accurate. It means that (for some reason) you do not understand what is being to you. it means an important story which your newspaper gets ahead of all the other newspapers. 1.Can I go out on a story immediately? No. Wait until you are more experienced. 3.What do I need to remember when I go out to cover a story? You need to be curious, have a good nose for a story and must us research to inform yourselves of missing parts of the story. 4.What should I keep in mind? Don’t miss your deadline, don’t be rude, don’t talk too much but make sure you listen to the interviewee carefully. 6.How can I listen carefully while taking notes? If the interviewee agrees, you can use a recorder to get the facts straight. His discussion with his new boss, Hu Xin, was to strongly influence his life as a journalist. You’ll find your colleagues very eager to assist you. Not only am I interested in photography, but I took an amateur course at university to update my skills.
