Lin SAGD There is a maj or concern that the top water zone, bottom water zone and top gas zone of an oil sand deposit might be detrimental to oil recovery from steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) process. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the thief zones on the performance of SAGD process using CMGs STARS simulator. Numerical simulation result s indicated that : (1) there is a detrimental effect of top water zone on SAGD performance; (2) low steam inj ection efficiency is caused by low pressure difference between the top gas and steam inj ection pressure; (3) when the oil density is higher than water density resulting in heated oil flowing to bottom water lowering the oil recovery.
