Subsurface Well Equipment—2 Basic Types Closely coupled reciprocating, double-acting pump driven by reciprocating engine. Installed below working fluid level. High pressure power fluid directed to engine through one conduit. Spent power fluid and well production directed to surface through another conduit. Pumps fluid from wellbore to surface. Complete engine and pump called Hydraulic Pump. High pressure power fluid directed to top of engine (motor) piston while exhausted power fluid from lower side of piston is directed to relieved area of engine valve where it is discharged. When piston reaches end of down stroke, reduced diameter at top of valve rod allows high pressure fluid to enter under engine valve. Because valve has larger area at bottom than at top, it moves upward. Engine End of PumpDown Stroke Down Stroke Up Stroke Flow paths to piston are reversed. The pump, therefore, begins its upstroke.
