A As a firefighter in New York, between alarms I used to rush to the company office to read The New York Times. One day, an article caught my eyes, which I took to be a calumny(诽谤)on William Butler Yeats, my favorite poet. And I determined to write a letter to the editor of the Sunday Book Review. I don’t know why I felt it my duty to defend the reputation of the poet, but I just knew that I had to write that letter. Until that point in my life I had not written much of value — a few poems and short stories. I sent some materials to various magazines but found no one was willing to publish my works. It was a special and unexpected delight, then, when I learned something I’d written would finally be printed. Ironically it wasn’t one of my poems or short stories — it was my letter to The New York Times. Later, I received a letter from True Magazine and one from The New Yorker, asking for an interview. I also received a phone call from a famous publishing house that asked if I might be interested in writing a book about my life. I had little confidence in my ability to write a whole book, though I thought that my work as a firefighter was a worthy subject. So I wrote a collection of stories of firefighters, and it went on to sell two million copies. I had found out that the writing was a natural result of the passion I felt. One’s education and experience will guide him toward making a right decision, but his passion will enable him to make a difference in whatever he does. 1. Why did the author write a letter to The New York Times? A. To publish some articles he wrote in his spare time. B. To ask for some information about his favorite poet. C. To express his opinion about the article he read in it. D. To point out the mistakes made by the editor. 2. We can learn from the text that the author ______
