Jane Austen (1775-1817 ) 1. Her life A daughter of a country clergyman, the sixth child of the seven children. She was educated mainly at home by his father. Living a quiet life in the countryside, and wrote about the small world she lived in. “a fine engraving made upon a little piece of ivory only tow inches square” (两寸象牙上的精雕细琢) She remained single all her life. She died of kidney disease at the age of 41. 2. Features of her novels Materials: family life of England’s local middle-class countryside which she was very familiar with. “Three or four families in a country village is the very thing to work on”. Theme: love and marriage. Technique: accurate observation and vivid character drawing. 4. About Pride and Prejudice About the title: Pride and Prejudice “pride”: Mr. Darcy’s arrogant manner. “prejudice”: the misunderstanding from both Elizabeth and Darcy. plot The Bennets have five unmarried daughters—from oldest to youngest, Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia—and Mrs. Bennet is desperate to marry off all of them. so the story begins when Charles Bingley, a wealthy young gentleman, with his close friend Mr.Darcy, has rented the neighboring Netherfield Park… Major Characters Elizabeth Bennet - The novel’s protagonist. The second daughter of Mr. Bennet. Elizabeth is the most intelligent and sensible of the five Bennet sisters. quick-witted, lovely, clever, independent. Her realization of Darcy’s essential goodness eventually made her get rid of the initial prejudice against him. Fitzwilliam Darcy - A wealthy gentleman. Though Darcy is intelligent and honest, he is haughty/ arrogant to look down on his social inferiors.
