Design of O ring seal and groove
O - ring seal is a typical extrusion type seal. The compression ratio and stretching of the diameter of the o-ring section are the main contents of the seal design, which is of great significance to the sealing performance and service life. The o-ring is usually installed in the seal groove for sealing. The sealing effect of O - shaped sealing ring depends largely on the correct matching of the o-ring size and groove size to form a reasonable sealing ring compression and tensile strength. When the sealing device is designed and processed, if the o-ring compression is too small, it will cause leakage. Excessive compression may result in leakage of rubber stress in o-ring. In the same way, overstretching in the o-ring can also accelerate aging and cause leakage. There are strict rules on the worlds standards.
1. Design principles of o-ring seal
1) compression ratio
The compression ratio W is usually expressed in the following formula:
W = (do - h)/do %
The section diameter of the O ring in the free state (mm)
H -- the distance between the bottom of the o-ring groove and the sealed surface, the height of the section (mm) after the compression of the o-ring.
When selecting the compression ratio of the o-ring, the following three aspects should be considered:
A. Adequate seal contact area should be available
B. The friction is as small as possible
C. Avoid permanent deformation as much as possible.
From these factors, it is not difficult to find that there are contradictions between them. Large pressure can be obtained by large compression ratio, but excessive compressibility will no doubt increase the sliding friction and permanent deformation. While the compression rate is too small, it can be caused by the coaxiality error of the sealing groove and the o-ring error which does not meet the requirement.
