Those whohavenot a roofovertheirheads will bewetted tothe skin,said thegood old poet. Ohlet me in!Let me in!Iamcold,andIm sowet! exclaimed suddenly a childthatstood cryingatthe doorandknocking foradmittance, while the rainpoureddown,andthe windmade allthe windows rattle. Poorthing! saidtheoldpoet, ashe went toopenthedoor.Therestood a little boy,quite naked,and the waterrandownfromhis long golden hair;he trembledwith cold,andhadhe not come intoa warmroomhe wouldmost certainlyhave perishedinthe frightful tempest. Poorchild!saidthe old poet,ashe tookthe boybythehand.Come in, come in,and Iwill soon restore thee!Thou shalthave wine and roasted apples, forthou artverilya charming child!Andthe boywassoreally.His eyes were like two brightstars;andalthough the watertrickleddown his hair,itwavedinbeautiful curls.Helooked exactlylike alittle angel, but he wassopale, andhis whole bodytrembled withcold.Hehada nice little bowinhishand,but itwasquite spoiledbythe rain, andthetints ofhis many-coloredarrows ranone into the other. The old poet seatedhimselfbeside hishearth,andtook the little fellowon hislap;he squeezedthe waterout of his drippinghair,warmed his hands between his own, andboiledforhimsome sweet wine.Thenthe boy recovered, hischeeks againgrewrosy,he jumped downfrom the lapwherehe wassitting, anddanced round the kind oldpoet. You areamerryfellow,saidthe oldman.Whatsyourname? Myname isCupid, answeredtheboy.Dontyou knowme?There lies my bow; itshoots well,Icanassureyou! Look,the weather isnowclearingup,and themoon isshining clearagainthroughthe window. /
