College of Bioengineering, Chongqing University of Technology, Chongqing 400054, China) A stract Effects of lauroyl glutamine, lauroyl glycine and lauroyl alanine on the friction and wear characteristics of VI 350 mineral lubricating oil were evaluated by using a fourball friction tester. The topographies and chemical features of theworn surfaces wereanalyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Xray photoelectron spectroscopy ( XPS) , respectively. Results indicated that the fatty acyl amino acids effectively improved antiwear and frictionreducing abilities of VI 350 lubricating oil. Improvement of anti wear andfrictionreducing abilities of theoil by amino acids was mainly ascribed to the formation of a composite boundary lubrication film due to the adsorptions and triboreactions of amino acids.
