Abstract Valley lines are abstract representation of terrain and play important roles in various
application, such as in the area of hydrology, biology and geomorphometry. The automatic extraction
of valley line has been an active research topic for a long time. According to the data sources used,
existing methods can be classified into three categories, which are those based on contour, based on
TIN and based on grid matrix. Due to the fast development of InSAR and LIDAR technology, high
quality grid elevation data is widely available in present days. However, there is not a method which
can extract complete valley lines from the grid elevation matrix. And there are not effective methods
for reducing the process of noise in valley line. This paper designs a novel model based on analysis
of terrain characteristics of valley lines. The primary valley lines are extracted based on water
accumulation algorithm in first stage. Then the local morphometry is investigated to append eligible
terrain specific point. The third step considers the reduction of noises in the result. Based on the
inductive analysis, the noises are classified into different types and handled according to the context.
