LOGO LOGO Walt Whitman Master works Achievement Life&career Walt Whitman(1819-1892) American poet Essayist Humanist Journalist Walt Whitman 1819 Born in a working-class family, in Long Island, New York. 1832 At 4, family moved to Brooklyn,New York. 1830 At 14, he dropped out of school and became an apprentice printer. 1835 Returned to Long Island and taught in country schools. 1838 Edited a newspaper, the Long Islander. 1841 Backed to New York City to work as a printer, journalist and delivered some political speeches. 1841 He published some short stories. After one year, he published a novel was entitled Franklin Evans in New York. Life&Career 1848 He became a editor of a local newspaper in New Orleans where he witnessed a slave auction. He began writing poetry at that time. 1855 His father died. During the spring, Whitman paid for the publication of the first edition of Leaves of Grass himself. 1856 The second edition of Leaves of Grass was published with Emersons letter of congratulations. 1861 As the American Civil War was beginning, Whitman volunteered as a nurse in the army hospitals.. 1865 Whitman was fired from his job. Aiding in his popularity was the publication of O Captain! My Captain!, a relatively conventional poem on the death of Abraham Lincoln, the only poem to appear in anthologies during Whitmans lifetime. 1871 His mother died. 1882 He met with Oscar Wilde. 1891 He prepared a final edition of Leaves of Grass, a version that has been nicknamed the Deathbed Edition. 1892 Whitman died on March 26, 1892.An autopsy revealed his lungs had diminished to one-eighth their normal breathing capacity, a result of bronchial pneumonia.
