The current research status of the residu al strength of sliding zone soils, the strain and softening rules of drained shear strength, the strength drop of soil slopes due to reservoir impoundment and the progressive failure of bank slopes w as summarized and introduced. Moreover, the study m eans and technical path f or bank landslide due to flu ctu ating reservoir w ater levels were discussed.
