Adopting a cross-cultural design, the present study explored cultural differences on perceived
work-family conflict (WFC) and family-work conflict (FWC) between members of an individualistic (UK)
and a collectivistic (Taiwan) society. Potential antecedents (work demands, family demands), consequences
(job satisfaction, family satisfaction, happiness), as well as cultural moderators (independent self,
interdependent self) were examined.
Structured questionnaires were used to survey full-time employees, 220 and 103 valid questionnaires
each were returned in Taiwan and the UK. Main findings are as follows:
1. Both Taiwanese and British women reported higher family demands than men, while only
British men reported higher work demands than women.
2. Both Taiwanese and British employees with younger children reported higher WFC, while this
Taiwanese group also reported higher FWC.
3. Work demands, especially working hours and workload, contributed to the perceived WFC.
4. Valuing work over family was positively related to the perceived WFC, especially so among
British employees.
5. For both Taiwanese and British employees, WFC affected job satisfaction, while FWC affected
family satisfaction. Both job satisfaction and family satisfaction affected personal happiness.
