Heat treatment and surface modification are the key technologies available today, to enhance the effective use of materials, to achieve the desired properties of the components used in the automotive industries, to save energy and conserve natural resources. A short overview of automotive materials is presented in this paper. Selected aspects of heat treatment and surface modification technologies including future technological possibilities, of relevance to the automotive industry are also reviewed. 1.
