Psychology of Yuanyou Literati as Revealed from the Poems of
Su Shi and Su Zhe Inscribed on Paintings

Abstract: The practice of inscribing poems on paintings prevailed in the Northern Song Dynasty and theYuan Dy
nasty. Su Shi and Su Zhe, thetwo leading figures in theliterary circle, and the other scholars of Yuanyou showed a
strong inclination towards self- entertainment in their aesthetic experience. Their poems expressed their pursuit
of spiritual freedom and their worry about the strife of party groupings. Such is their psychology reflected in their
practice of inscribing poems on paintings.
