Build a Simple Box Gauge to Set and Re-Set a Wolverine Vari Grind Jig The Wolverine Vari-Grind jig has a variable support stem that provides a great deal of flexibility, but is difficult to set precisely to a desired position. This simple two-sided box gauge makes setting the variable arm accurate and repeatable. The Wolverine Vari Grind jig can be used in conjunction with a Geiger’s Vertical Solution Pro Sharp 4X precision gouge sharpening system, to produce the following grinds:  Ellsworth style side grind on a deep fluted bowl gouge  Micro Bevel side grind on a deep fluted bowl gouge with single or multiple relief bevels  Spindle gouges To accomplish these grinds the variable stem must be set to a particular position. A simple two- sided box gauge can be built to set the variable arm of the Vari Grind jig accurately and repeatedly. Here’s how to make it: Step 1) Cut a piece of ¼ thick plywood to 6-1/4” wide and 7” long. Step 2) Cut two pieces of 1-1/2” X 1-1/2” aluminum angle to 7” lengths. Step 3) Use an adhesive that bonds aluminum to wood to glue the two pieces of aluminum to either side of the 6-1/4” width. 6-1/4” 6-1/4” 7” ¼” thick plywood Top View Side View You now have a two-sided box that measures 6-1/4” between the walls. To use the box gauge: 1) Set the face side of the Vari Grind jig against one wall as shown below. 2) Loosen the wing nut. 3) Swing the variable arm until it touches the opposite wall. 4) Tighten the wing nut securely.
