Functional Ionic Liquids: Synthesis and Application of
Chiral Ionic Liquids

Abstract Chirality shows an important role in chemistry. Ionic liquids have a special character different
from common organic solvents for their alterable structures. Chiral ionic liquids can be gotten when chirality
is induced to ionic liquids. They may be used to chiral synthesis, chiral separation, or chiral catalysis. Those
chiral ionic liquids reported before are presented in this review, and discussed especially from the viewpoint
of designing functionalized ionic liquids. Three criteria for designing and synthesizing ionic liquids from
natural chiral materials are brought out.
