The formation of panicle involves a series ofphysiological and biochem icalprocesses, including the formation of inflo- rescence architectures, grain development etc. In this paper, the classification of rice panicle type, the relationships btween panicle type and yield and quality, aswell as genes controlling paniclemorphology were reviewed. A lso, some problems a- bout panicle type in rice breeding were discussed. Itwas believed that themolecularmechanism ofpanicle type development w ill be clear, whichmaybe contribute to high yield and quality of rice breeding.
