BA I X iaohu ,i ZHAN G X iaohong, D IN G L u sheng ( College ofL ife Science and iotechnology, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Shanghai 200240, China) Abstract: A longside a urban scenicriver, four sections different in embankment ( cobblestone, clay, bondstone and concreteposts) were se lected to study quality of the riverwater, water at the interface bewt een the embankment and the riverwater, and functionalm icrobial ecolog ical diversity at the interface. Results show that the former two were better than the latter two in quality of the interfacewater; the cobble stone bank was thehighest in population of functionalmicrobes in the interfacewater and in themud over the interface, and followed by the clay bank, bondstonebank and concrete posts. The clay bankwas themost capableof absorbing pollutants thus providing m icrobeswith a fa vorable habitat, while the cobblestone provided abigger surface area formicrobes to live in because of its structure.
