The technology could slash fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Many have turned their attention to carmakers in Japan and the United States, interested in the development of hybrid and battery powered electric vehicles. TOYOTA Prius has become the worlds best selling hybrid vehicle. Tesla motors, Americas emerging car maker, unveiled the companys first battery powered car, Tesla Roadster. By the end of 2010, GM plans to launch a highly acclaimed Volt hybrid, and Chrysler has recently announced that the same plan is in progress. As the media moves the flash to mature markets, China is laying solid ground. At present, China has become the worlds second largest car market, and by 2030, is expected to overtake the United States, ranked first. If Chinas auto industry grows at an average annual rate of 12%, China will add 270 million new cars over the next 25 years. By 2030, Chinas total number of passenger cars could reach 287 million vehicles, about 30% of the worlds total automobiles. The industry believes that such a huge number of cars will be a great pressure on energy and the environment, China needs to adopt updated fuel saving environmental technology.
