 46. How To Mark[vt.标记] a Book. 1. You know you have to read between the lines to get the most out of anything. I want to persuade[vt.劝告] you to do something equally important in the course of your reading. I want to persuade you to write between the lines. Unless you do, you are not likely to do the most efficient[有效率的] kind of reading. 分析:between the lines=言外之意be likely to=可能;persuade=说服; efficient有效率的2. I contend[v.主张], quite bluntly[坦率的], that marking up a book is not an act of mutilation[n.毁损] but love. 3. You shouldnt mark up a book which isnt yours. Librarians[n.图书馆管理员] (or your friends) who lend you books expect you to keep them clean, and you should. If you decide that I am right about the usefulness of marking books, you will have to buy them. Most of the worlds great books are available[adj.可获得的] today, in reprint[n.再版] editions[版本], for a modest[adj. 4. There are two ways in which you can own a book. The first is the property[n.财产] right you establish by paying for it, just as you pay for clothes, and furniture. But this act of purchase is only the prelude[n.前提] to possession[n. Full ownership[n.所有权] comes only when you have made it a part of yourself, and the best way to make yourself a part of it is by writing in it. An illustration[n.例证] may make the point clear. You buy a beefsteak and transfer[v.转移] it from the butchers icebox[n.冰柜] to your own. But you do not own the beefsteak in the most important sense[n.意义] until you consume[v.消费] it and get it into your bloodstream[血液]. I am arguing that books, too, must be absorbed[(absorb):v.吸收] in your blo
