If you just examine intentional, effortful responses, you’d be left with the impression that racism has been largely elimianted, at least among White college students. But if you look at automatic, effortless responses, then racism seems to be alive and well, even among those same white college students. If affective forecats are driven by intentaion, effortful response—which are highly egalitarian—then most white college students should expect to be very upset about witnessing an act of racism. Yet, when it comes to actual emotions, those same people might not be so upset after witnessing an act of racism because of the lingering anti-black attitudes that exist in automatic, effortless responses and drive emotions. To test these hypothesis, we had to have White college students witness an act of racism in the lab.
