There will be a laboratory component to do practical hands on procedures involved with the course. The parasitology component of VN113 will be assessed during the semester by two written tests. Test 1 will be on arthropods. Test 2 will be on protozoa, flukes and cestodes. There will be a combined practical exam at the end of the semester for microbiology and parasitology. A pass must be achieved in this practical examination to prove competency. The parasite course is delivered in 2 modules of approximately even amounts of content. This booklet is the first module on ectoparasites. It is expected that the study of parasitology will enable you to know enough about the biology of parasites to understand when, why and how animals become infected with them and how they affect their hosts. This understanding of the parasites and their life cycles will enable you to provide advice on prevention, diagnosis and/or treatment of some infestations, and effectively assist vets in these areas with other types of infestations. references Charleston W.A.G.
