Background of Friction Stir Welding (FSW) TWI Ltd, located in England, patented FSW, in 1991. FSW is a solid state (no melting) welding process that produces high quality welds in difficult to weld materials such as aluminium. FSW is used to manufacture light weight transport structures such as boats, trains, and airplanes.  The probe of a rotating FSW tool is plunged between two clamped plates.  Friction between the tool and the plate generates heat, which causes a plasticized zone to form around the tool.  The rotating tool is then traversed, frictionally heating and plasticizing material as it moves, forming a solid- state joint. All rights reserved. 2 The increased use of FSW created the need for a US standard AWS published the first FSW standard in 2009  Entitled, AWS D17.3 Specification for Friction Stir Welding of Aluminum Alloys for Aerospace Applications AWS Committee on Welding in the Aircraft and Aerospace Industries – Written by the AWS D17J Subcommittee on Friction Stir Welding Subcommittee Chairmen – Doug Waldron (Boeing) was the founding subcommittee chairman. Work began in 1999. – Dave Bolser (Boeing) became chairman in 2006. Completed work and published the standard in 2009. – Jeff Ding (NASA) became the subcommittee chairman in 2010.
