Geological Surveys Institute of Shanghai, Shanghai 200072, China) Abstract: This paper aims to present space development characteristics of Shanghai about urban compactness and mixed land use degree, and further explore the spatial consistency. ArcGIS technology and analytic hierarchy process (AHP) are employed. The results show that: 1）Compactness of Shanghai overall is not high which in forms of ‘palmate’ distribution with city center as the core and suburban new town as the extension, ‘city center-periphery’ presents significant spatial gradient difference;2）Mixed land use degree of Shanghai is high, and decreases from city center to suburb slowly with more balanced distribution. 3）Overall, the area of spatial consistency accounted for about 43%, Shanghai can be divided into three regions: ‘city center-suburban new town’ with high compact high mixed, ‘city fringe area’ with low compact high mixed, ‘outer suburbs’ with low compact low mixed. Shanghai has formed ‘central city- suburban new town’ high compact high mixed spatial patterns of spreading to the heart, we can implement multiple and complementary regional development policy through integration of urban space form and layout of land use, to facilitate urban space optimization and the stock land reform.
