Shaking table test on pounding responses of simply supported
isolated bridges under earthquake excitation

Abstract: Seism ic pound ing has significant influence on the seism ic responses of bridges andmaybe is the critical
factor causing the damage to some bridges. A shak ing table test on pound ing responses of smi ply supported isolated
bridge is done. A tw o-span smi ply supported isolated bridge model is designed firstly, and the influences of gap,
mass ratio of adjacent girders and properties of isolated bearing on the pound ing responses of the bridge are invest-i
gated. Testing resu lts show that the parameters, includ ing gap andmass ratio of adjacent girders and properties of
isolated bearing, have significant effects on the pounding responses of bridges. The b igger the gap of the adjacent
girders is, the low er the frequency of pound ing becomes. The larger them ass ratio of adjacent girders is, the larger
the mi pact force becomes. The lead rubber bearing has h igher capacity of energy d issipation than the plate rubber
bearing, and may reduce the mi pact force bewt een the adjacent girders or even avoid the occurrence of the poun-
ding of bridges. Th is provides a reference for pounding prevention design of bridges.
