Overview In this series of lessons, students will learn about the methods and tools used for marine
navigation and practice finding headings and bearings.
Level Secondary 4-6 (Key Stage 4)
Duration Pre-workshop classroom-based activity 1.5 hr
On-site visit/workshop 1 hr
Post-workshop classroom-based activity 1.5 hr
Learning Objectives ‣ To show curiosity and interest in science.
‣ To demonstrate interest in exploring their environment and solving simple scientific problems.
‣ To select and follow appropriate methods of investigations for specific purposes.
‣ To collect information and draw conclusions for decision-making.
‣ To analyse ways that scientific and technological development influences our society.
Key Vocabulary Navigate, navigation, landmark, compass, parallel ruler, dividers, sextant, heading, bearing,
line of position, buoy.
Factual Knowledge To know the systems used to navigate around the world.
Procedural Knowledge Will be able to pinpoint the longitude and latitude of different places and follow compass
headings and bearings to complete a task.
Conceptual Knowledge Understand the importance and use of navigational systems for marine travel transportation.
Skills ‣ Predict and hypothesise
‣ Describe how using and understanding maps, stars and lines of latitude / longitude can
help determine your location.
