Laminated Object Manufacturing (LOM) The LOM processes produce parts from bonded paper plastic, metal of composite sheet stock. LOM machines bond a layer of sheet material to a stack of previously formed laminations, and then a laser beam follows the contour of part of a cross section generated by support. As you have seen,once a product has been designed,there are many sequences that can be used within the various processes required to produce the part. In fact,the number of combinations of sequences is usually so large that, prior to computers,process planning was really just a guessing game. However,with the advent of CAPP,manufacturing personnel can easily determine the optimum sequence of operations for producing a part. CAPP systems are expert computer systems that collect and store all known information about a specific manufacturing setting, as well as numerous general manufacturing and engineering principles. They then use this information to determine the optimum plan for producing a given part. Such a plan will specify the machines to be used in producing the part,the sequence of operations,the tooling to be used ,optimum speed and feed settings for the tools,and any other data needed to produce the part.
