I am an American-born Chinese and now a principal of a high school. I am totally surprised when I am told that most Chinese high schools are aimed at high admission rate to universities in their education. Here, I like to share a piece of my mind of what Americans do in education. In America, many of the society’s most cherished values, such as equal treatment for fellow citizens and respect for the law, depend on individual character. Therefore, the development of character and citizenship has always been a primary goal of America’s schools. Today, it is more important than ever that we educate our young people to become knowledgeable and compassionate citizens of our university. Since 2002, almost all schools have received grants to carry out character education programs.
