As ocean transport which may be most damaging to the goods prevails, proper packing can be extremely important. Different types of goods and different destination may differ in packing. Goods subject to breakage have to be crated, and those subject to moisture wrapped in plastic. Others may require some special treatment or coating before shipment, still other have to be refrigerated while in transit. Types of packing Many goods have little or no form of packing and are carried loose. They are nude cargo (裸装) and cargo in bulk (散装). The former include iron and steel plates, iron rods, railway sleepers, steel rails, etc. and the latter, oil, ores, grain, coal, etc. Heavy vehicles, locomotives and buses are also carried loose, because of the impracticability and high cost of packing. Outer packing The following are types of outer packing used in foreign trade: 1. Baling is a form of packing consisting of a canvas cover often cross-looped by metal or rope binding. It is suitable for paper, wool hay, peat, cotton, carpets and rope. Basically, it is a cheap and effective form of packing which aids handling. It affords limited protection to cargo. 2. Bags made of jute, cotton, plastic, or paper are a cheap form of container and are ideal for a wide variety of products including cements, fertilizer, flour, oilcakes, animal feeding products, chemicals and many consumer products.
