The background concentrations of soil heavy metals, As, d, r, u, Ni, Pb and Zn, w ere investigated based on an extensive investiga tion conducted in the whole area of Beijing. About 120 soil samples taken from the area w ithout pollution of heavy metals were select ed from the total 803 soil samples. After analyzing the samples w ith strict quality assure and quality control (QA/ Q ) procedures, the heavy metal concentrations in the soils were calculated using statistical method. The revised background concentrations of the soils in Beijing are proposed to be 709 mg/ kg for As, 0119 mg/ kg for d, 298 mg/ kg for r, 187 mg/ kg for u, 268 mg/ kg for Ni, 246 mg/ kg for Pb, 575 mg/ kg for Zn, respectively. ompared w ith the concentrations suggested by hina National Environ mental Monitoring enter ( NEM ) in 1990, the d background concentration suggested in present study is about 125% higher than that of NEM , and the As, r, u, Zn concentrations are 19% ~ 55% lower than those of NEM , while the concentra tions of Pb and Ni are not obviously different from those of NEM .
