England (Informally) the Map of U.K. Origin of Britain During the Ice age, Britain was connected to the European mainland, but the melting of the glaciers caused the sea level to rise, creating the island of Great Britain and many of its neighboring smaller islands. It is separated from the continent by the North sea at its widest, and by the English Channel at its narrowest points. At the narrowest point France and England are only 22miles (35km)apart. Britain is situated in Western Europe and is separated from the European continent by the North Sea, the Strait of Dover(多佛海峡) and the English Channel. It is an insular(海岛的) country.
