The present paper makes an all － round retrospect on the investigating course of remains of ancient Shandong salt production ，and sums up the relevant problems so far studied into five subjects ，i. e. salt － producing imple- ments ，salt － producing technical process ，related settlement form and relations of production ，resources interaction between coastal and inland regions ，and the origin and development of salt － manufacture history.
