A stract: Silicon ( S i) is the second largest abundantm ineral elem ent in the earth s crust. A lthough S i is stillnot listed as
an essential elem ent for the m ajority of plant species, it plays mi portant roles in stmi ulating plant grow th and nutrition
upta e and enhancing plant resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses. This paper rev iew ed the d istribution and absorption of
S i in plant and its physiological functions w ith focusing on the m echanism s of Si m ediated pathogen resistance. H igher
plants mainly ta e up S i in the form of [ S i(OH) ], and there are active and passive Si upta e mechan ism s. Silicon can

deposit in the epiderm al cell walls beneath the cuticle, form a cuticleSi double layer and enhance cellw allm echanical
strength and stab ility, and therefore retard and resist pathogen from penetration and spreading. M ore research ev idence
show s that S itreated plants can significantly increase the activ ity of protective enzym es such as perox idase, polyphenol
oxidase,
