I ns titute of Orthop edics and Traumatolog , China A cadem of TCM ( Beij ing, 100700) Abstract Objective To study t he effect of a Chinese her al gel on repair of meniscal injury, in order to find an easy and effect ive w ay to promote the repair of this injury, especially those in the avascular portion. Methods Eight healthy adult white ra its w ith ig ears, 3kg w eight or so w ithout limitation in sex were fed in the same condit ions. The animals were randomly divided into two groups: t he control and gelat in control groups. In gelatin group, Chinese her al medicinal gel was implanted into one side of meniscal lesion while no management w as done in t he contralateral side of the uninjuried meniscus. In gelatin control group, Chinese her al medicinal gel w as implanted into one side of lesion and gelatin ( Sigma. Co. TAPE B) w hose physical properties w ere similar w ith the Chinese medicinal gel w as implanted into ot her side.T he gelatin control w as esta lished so as to prove t he repairing effect of the Chinese her al gel depending not only on it! s physical ac tion, ut to a larger extent on it! s pharmacological action.T he meniscus w ere cut transversely at the anterior 1/ 3 of medial meniscus. Models in oth sides w ere esta lished and Chinese her al medicinal gel w as implanted into one side of lesion.T he other side served as the control group. The animals w ere sacrificed at 6t h, 12t h and 24t h weeks respectively after operat ion.
