Ecol . , 1998, 9( 3) : 225~ 230. The study shows that the leaf area index(LAI) of idand short rotation poplar plantations for pulp ti ber was increased with increasing planting density and stand age. A ong the 3 poplar clones tested, NL80351 had thehighest LAI, I72 had thelowest one and I69 was the inter ediate. The relationship between LAI and sunlight penetration rate could be described by ex tinction equation odifiedby M.Monsiand T.Saeki, andthe extinction coefficient was 0. 818. LAI had a close relationship with aboveground annual net bio ass production, which could be expressed by exponential function. There existed a great difference of bio ass productivity and distribution pattern a ong stands with different clones and planting densities at 4 years old. The bio ass productivity of the stand with 1111ste s!h - 2 was thehighest, as 1. 4 ti es as that with 500 ste s!h - 2. NL80351had the highest productivity, and I72 was the lowest.
