The Northwest Rebellion  The Chinese (1870 – 1900) Western Canada 1870 - 1884 Influx of English immigrants from the East - Métis fears realized; become minority in Red River - new immigrants push for Métis to change or leave - more immigrants due to better roads and free land - the Canadian Pacific Railway begins construction (1881) Some Métis move further West (Saskatchewan) - try to get further away to maintain traditional culture - Métis build a settlement at Batoche Native tribes loosing their way of life - Cree, Assiniboine, Blackfoot, and others - Buffalo are being hunted to extinction - Unable to maintain traditional livelihood - treaties not being supported North West Mounted Police Created on May 23, 1873 Bring law and order to the new North West Territories - newly purchased land, little population - no effective law system In charge of keeping the peace - issues relating to First Nation - dealing with Americans in Canada - enforcing Canadian sovereignty Fought in the Northwest Rebellion Still exist today as Canada’s National Police Force - Now called the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Western Canada 1884 Immigrants catch up with the Métis - Canadian Government promoting western settlement Métis call on Louis Riel for help - members of Métis community were in Red River (1870) - 3 representatives are sent to the US to bring Riel back - Riel initially reluctant: family, age, and health - persuaded to return to help Métis (1884) Talks with Big Bear and Poundmaker - First Nations chiefs - grievances with Canadian government - different reasons so no agreement Riel sends an appeal to Ottawa - Canadian Government is vague - offers a census to determine the next step Big Bear Poundmaker A New Provisional Government Set up in March 1885 - similar principles to 1869, unites the different groups - tried similar negotiating tactics with Ottawa Provisional Government weaker than 1869 – 70 - Cana
