The vehicle performance simulation software, i.e., GT-DRIVEand a self developed program were used to build up the vehicle model, and was applied to compute the fuel economy of the vehicle. The computation was conducted using a typical driving cycle to simulate a working cycle of the garbage pickup. The simulated fuel economy of the hydraulic hybrid vehicle and the engine operation points were compared to that of the original vehicle. The results show that because the hydraulic hybrid concept can store and re-use energy and optimize the engine operation points, the greatest decrease in the rate of the fuel consumption is 43.30%. This technique has significant fuel economy potential when it is applied to vehicles of great mass and frequent start-stops. Key words: vehicle; hydraulic hybrid; fuel economy; simulation caculation
