About the Text The article argues that creativity arises from making the best use of mental capabilities that everyone possesses, not from some kind of special endowment that only a few have inherited. It calls our attention to the argument that all people can do a creative job, if they plan ahead, abstract new ideas from details of the work as it progresses, revise frequently, and are occupied with the work itself, not just with the final product. An effective creative process gradually selects an actual product from all possibilities. To understand it is to understand how originality and developmental qualities turn out the product. Summary Creating has a number of stages. Planning: instead of producing the work directly the maker produces a plan for it. Abstracting: instead of working from general intent to particulars, the maker abstracts new ideas from the particulars in progress. Undoing: instead of getting everything perfect, the maker undoes and redoes parts of the work.
