A bstract Thedecades.old synchronousmemorybusinterfacehasrestrictedmany innovationsin thememory system . whichisfacingvariouschallenges(orwalls)intheeraofmulti-coreandbigdata.Inthispaper,wearguethatamessage- based inteffaceshouldbeadoptedtoreplacethetraditionalbus.based interfacein thememorysystem.A novelmessage interfacebasedmemorysystem calledMIMSisproposed.ThekeyinnovationofMIM Sisthatprocessorscommunicatewith thememorysystem throughauniversalandflexiblemessagepacketinterfac e.Eachmessagepacketisallowedtoencapsulate multiplememoryrequests(orcommands)andadditionalsemanticinformation.Thememorysystem ismoreintelligentand ac tivebyequippingwith alocalbufferscheduler,which isresponsibleforprocessingpackets,schedulingmemoryrequests, preparingresponses.andexecutingspecificcommandswiththehelpofsemanticinofrmation.UndertheMIMSframework. manypreviousinnovationsonmemoryarchitectureas wellas new optimizationoppOrtunitiessuchas addresscompression and continuousrequestscombination canbenaturallyincorporated.Theexperimentalresultson a 16.corecycl-edetailed simulationsystem show that:withaccurategranularitymessage,MIMScanimprovesystem perofrmanceby53.2l% and reduceenergydel
