Eating organic food willnotmake you healthier,according to researchersatStanford
University,although itcould cutyourexposuretopesticides.
They looked atmore than 200 studiesofthe contentand associated health gainsof
organicandnon-organicfoods.Overalltherewasnodiscernible(可识别的1differencebetween
thenutritionalcontent,although theorganicfoodwas30% lesslikely tocontainpesticides.
Criticssaythework isinconclusiveandcallformorestudies.
Theresearch,published inthejournalAnnalsofInternalMedicine,lookedat17
studies comparing people who ate organic with those who did notand 223 studies that
comparedthelevelsofnutrients,bacteria,fungus(真菌)orpesticidesinvariousf0ods—
includingfruits,vegetables,grains,meats,milkand eggs.
None ofthe human studies ran for longer than two years,making conclusions about
long—term outcomesimpossible.And allofthe available evidence wasrelatively weak and
highlyvariable--whichtheauthorssayisunsurprisingbecauseofallthedifferentvariables,
likeweatherand soiltype,involved.
Furitandvegetablescontained similra amountsofvitamins,and milk thesameamount
ofprotein and fat-- although afew studiessuggestedorganicmilk contained moreomega-3.
Organicfoodsdidcontainmoreni~ogen (氮气),buttheresearchersshythisisprobably
due to differencesin fertilizeruse and ripenessatharvestand isunlikely to provide any
health benefit.Their findings support those ofthe UK’S Food Standards Agency,which
commissionedareview afew yearsago intoorganicfoodclaims.
ProfAlan Dangour,ofthe London School ofHygiene and TropicalMedicine,who
ca~ied out thatwork,said: “Consumers select organic foods ofr a variety ofreasons,
however this latestreview identifies that atpresent there are no convincing differences
between organic and conventionalfoods in nutrientcontentor health benefits.Hopefully
thisevidencewillbeusefu1toconsumers.”
